Queer As Folk.

in September of 2007, i started watching Queer As Folk. i put it in my Netflix queue on a whim, really. i had watched a few seasons of The L Word during the summer & i suppose i needed my homosexual fix. i enjoyed the first episode of QAF- lots of sex, lots of attractive males, what's not to like? i thought it might become my latest guilty pleasure.
OH, but i was so wrong.

after making my way through the first season, in very little time, i was completely IN LOVE with this show. i felt personally invested in the characters, i had a massive crush on Brian Kenny, and the season 1 finale MADE ME CRY. i don't ever cry in public & i never cry at movies/tv/etc. until now that is. and i didn't just get teary; no, i was BAWLING. oh my god, you just don't know how emotional it was!
and so, over the past few months, i have finished watching all 5 seasons. i managed to cry at every season finale, and several times throughout seasons 2 & 5. i went through a short period in November when QAF was all i could think about & everything i talked about referenced it. yeah, that was probably kind of annoying.

ANYWAY, i finally made it to the last episode of the last season a few days ago. i might have changed a few things about it, but all in all, it was a satisfying ending to my love affair with Queer As Folk.

THE END.

BOK BOK

if you've ever wondered what i would look like if i were a man, now you know.
like this:

aka mark lanegan of grunge legends The Screaming Trees, circa 1991.
it's the long wavy blonde hair & black Ray-Ban's that do it. and as one of my friends pointed out, "your chest isn't very big, so the top looks like it could be you too." there you have it!

last night H & E & i discussed our spirit animals. i am:

1/4 cat because you have to work for their love & affection & they can be quite aloof, but also loving & cuddly!

1/4 raccoon because they are mischievous & have black and white stripes.

1/4 giraffe because, well, i'm not really sure. something about the long neck & the spots being reminiscent of my art history background (?!?). and the purple tongue of course.

and 1/4 ostrich because they have ATTITUDE! "BOK BOK, I am an ostrich! Out of my way bitches!" (ostrich impression courtesy of E).

SCRUNCHAROOS!

i just made the best dessert ever, the enigmatically named Scruncharoo. i don't know what "scruncharoo" is supposed to denote, but they are terribly tasty. i must have had them as a little kid, because eating them brought back memories. ah, the good old days.

they are especially good after a little you-know-what. or maybe you don't know what. it's just as well.

i also got my two favorite magazines in the mail today: Magnet and Cooking Light.

Valentine's Day.

these are the Valentine's Days in the past that i can remember.

2002: i got my hair cut SHORT (it was long, then it was short, now it is long) & received a life-altering (or so i thought at the time) note from the object of my affection of my high school years.

2003: i was sicker than i've ever been in my life and my band, the legendary Right Angles, played at a Valentine's Day show. i was barely there, but i made it through tunes by the Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett, & Beat Happening.

2004: i saw Super Furry Animals in Athens, Georgia & it was pretty amazing. here's some visual evidence:

2005: i ate some ice cream, which resulted in the abandonment of my 4 month long journey into veganism. yeah, veganism wasn't for me so much.

2006: i went to New York City all by my lonesome for the day & went to Marc Jacobs & the Magnolia Bakery.

2007: it was a SNOW DAY so i was housebound & watched my favorite movie of all time, Aki Kaurismaki's The Man Without a Past.

this year: i am baking loads of cupcakes to provide to my weekend guests, The Depreciation Guild, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Crystal Stilts, who are going to play for the enthusiastic coeds here tomorrow & it is going to be SWEET.

words.

my favorite words to describe music are jangly and twangy.

and irreverent is my favorite word to describe art and humor. one Halloween in high school, my two friends & i went as "famous people with one name." i was Nico, he was Moses, and she was The Fonz. i remember telling my uncle about our costume choices & he said, "that's so Dada." i don't think i really knew much about Dada at the time, but i knew what he meant somehow. somehow i realized the randomness & whimsy & irreverence of our one named people related to Dada. i was pretty cool when i was 16.

the superbowl, life, and wayne & garth

we had our 2nd annual superbowl party this year & while it did result in momentary disaster (for me only, and not unlike last year's party, which had to do with me kissing the boy i liked at the time...) the more important outcome of the whole debacle was LIFE CHANGING! in a good way! supberbowl XXIIIIVVV did my psyche some good in the end.

these pictures are not from that night, but they were taken only a few days prior, and they are far more hilarious and entertaining than anything you could ever write about the superbowl, so there you have it.
